ABOUT CORNWALL

There is so much to see and do within the 1300 square miles of Cornwall.  The coast and inland areas offer marvelous weather, gorgeous scenery, much history and a variety of cultural, recreational and educational opportunities.  There are many golf courses and excellent sea, river and lake fishing.  The miles of hedgerows, sandy beaches, unspoiled coastline, fishermen towns, rolling hills, splendid mountains all remain in one’s mind years after seeing them.

The National Trust owns many miles of coastline and numerous properties in Cornwall; among them, Lanhydrock with 49 rooms open to the public, Trerice (an Elizabethan manor house and Cotehele, which dates from  1485, and the magnificent St. Michael's Mount, the jewel in Cornwall's crown.

Public gardens abound.  The mild Cornwall weather allows for many tropical species not often seen in Britain.  The Lost Gardens of Heligan, worthy of a full day’s visit, is an amazing recent resurrection of 110 acres of gardens and includes their Eden Project , an impressive indoor rainforest.

The English Heritage manages the romantic ruin,  Tintagel Castle (King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table), Dozemary Pool (into which, it is reputed, King Arthur's sword was thrown and a hand rose from the water and caught it) and  Restormel Castle in the wonderful town of Lostwithiel.

This is Daphne du Maurier country. You can visit many related sites including Jamiaca Inn, made famous by her book of the same name.

Bodmin Moor, one of the last completely unspoiled places in England, extends over 100 square miles.  A magical place, it is as flat as a prairie to the horizon line in all directions; the wet smell of the boggy marsh permeates the air.  There are many ancient standing stones and stone circles.

Cornwall is famous for many things, but we have a particular love for the hedgerows.  Dotted with magenta foxglove and rising from ten to twenty feet, the hedgerows hug the narrow roads and provide sanctuary for a wide range of wild life (and, sometimes, drivers!).  Hedgerows are almost everywhere in England, but, somehow, Cornwall's hedgerows seem taller, deeper and greener.
