County Clare, Ireland

THE CASTLE KEEP

THE CASTLE KEEP RENTS WITH THE COACH HOUSE.  OCCASSIONALLY, IT MIGHT BE AVAILABLE ALONE.

Accommodates 8
4 bedrooms
2  bathrooms, guest powder room

This is a fine 15th century Irish keep, or peel tower.  First restored in 1969 and recently redecorated, this castle offers the authenticity of ancient times without sacrificing the comforts of modern living.  All furnishings are in keeping with a 15th C. tower, but it doesn't look like a stage set.  Rich colors, comfortable furniture, tasteful appointments and the glorious views make this the perfect property for a family holiday or a wedding.

Step through an arched door into a small entranceway that has stone floors and walls.  The original stone staircase, built with no central support column, spirals upward.  In keeping with early custom, the stairway curves to the left going down which allowed defenders to have their sword arm free as they descended.

The entranceway opens into the large medieval style dining room that has stone walls and arches and oak ceiling beams.  Once a holding area for animals, it now has a large oak refectory table and 16 chairs.  A second small table in the alcove has four additional chairs.  There is also a guest powder room on this level,

The kitchen, to the right of the dining room, has a stone floor, beamed ceiling, a stainless steel double sink, microwave, a dishwasher, washer/dryer and two refrigerators.  Dark cupboards have a Gothic design.  The counter tops are made from local granite.  A gas fireplace is in the corner of the kitchen, beside the rocking chair.  The table seats 8 comfortably.

Despite modern accouterments, it's hard to remember that this kitchen is not original to the castle.  Windows look onto the green lawns.  A door opens to the front of the property.

Each room above the main floor is on its own floor level, one room to a floor.

The first level has an arched door opening into a bedroom that has an antique oak queen 4-poster bed, an armoire, a dressing table, a rocking chair, a stone floor ,  tapestry-print fabrics and prints on the walls.  Windows look down to the green lawns and meadow.

Up another level, there is a nice bathroom with a large shower stall and stone and tile surround.

Up again to a bedroom that has a two beds, one a queen bed and the other a single bed, two small, ornate chests of drawers and a wide window that has a 6-foot deep cushioned ledge that is comfortable enough for a nap.

Up the stairs again, there is a small bathroom that has stone walls and counter tops and a deep tub with a hand-held shower.  The windows are the original arrow slits (now glazed, of course).

Up again to the large sitting room.  It has comfortable furniture, old in the good way, lovely antiques, wall hangings.  There is a TV, DVD player, a stereo and a small selection of CD's. The large inglenook fireplace has a wide ledge on which to perch.  The ceiling is tall and arched and a musicians balcony runs along one wall.  Two large windows provide views of the lawns and meadows and over the lush farmland and, beyond, to distant  roof tops and meadow to the Shannon estuary.

The Minstrels Galler looks down onto the sitting room.  This area provides impressive views of the room and, beyond, through a large window, to the surrounding landscape.

Up again to the third bedroom,  with an antique queen 4-poster bed and antique furniture.  It is a bit smaller that the first two bedrooms, but it's terrific and very cozy.  It has a large window that looks over the neighboring stables and horses playing in the fields.

Clare Castle Rental Stairs UP

Up still again to a very large bedroom that has a 4-poster king bed and antique furniture and a tall, arched oak beamed ceiling.  There are no windows in this top-floor bedroom so it's very quiet and dard.

From this bedroom, stairs go up to the turret.  Standing on the turret, you can see, in the distance, the Burren and the sea.  We felt as if we could see all of Ireland
