This terrific cottage is in a gorgeous and utterly peaceful setting.  It is a recently-built cottage; however, it has the aura of an older home, cozy and homey.  It is very Irish.

Driveway, Lake and front of Ballyconnelly Cottage
Lake view through conservatory.

You enter into a wide hall that has incredible views straight across the turf to the water.  The owners have wisely placed a dining table here so that one can enjoy the glorious views while eating.  We were there on a drizzly day, but the view was still stunning.  The terra cotta walls, pine table and chairs don't compete with the main attraction: that view.

Connemara Lakeside Cottage Living Room
The living room is bright and cheery and comfortable.  Furnished in traditional style, there is a sofa, several easy chairs (one of which faces the sea), interesting books, art and personal mementos, beige berber carpeting and a cathedral ceiling that's made of pine.  A massive stone fireplace dominates one wall.  At the back of the room, a table and 6 chairs allows for another dining option.  There is a guest powder room off the hallway into the living room.

Connemara Lakeside Cottage Kitchen
The large, friendly kitchen has a stone floor, knotty pine cupboards, a small (but excellent) electric stove, a refrigerator/freezer, a microwave.  A window looks out to the back lawn and a door gives access to the back where there's a picnic table and barbecue.

Ground floor double bedroom

Ground floor hall bathroom

Ground floor double en suite bedroom
Two of the bedrooms are down a short hall.  One bedroom has a standard double bed with a delightful vintage tan and beige chenille spread, a wardrobe and a chest of drawers.  The large window looks onto a treed area at the front of the house.  The en suite bathroom has a shower stall.

The second bedroom has a standard double bed with a soft yellow spread, a pine chest of drawers and a tall, narrow pine wardrobe, a geranium-filled window that looks to the sea.  The private bathroom is off the hall.  It has a long, deep tub with a hand-held shower and a separate shower stall.

Master Suite Anteroom

The master bedroom suite is upstairs.  It consists of a separate study that has a desk and two comfortable futon chairs, cupboards built into knotty pine walls and windows that look to the Twelve Bens Mountains and the Emlaghnabehy Lake and the sea.  It would be the perfect place to do those exercises you've promised yourself you'll do when you are on holiday.

Master Suite Anteroom

The master bedroom is through the study room.  It has a queen bed with a Battenburg lace bed cover, a restored antique pine blanket chest at the foot of the bed, a nice, old chest of drawers and a wardrobe, a comfortable sofa, berber carpeting, a sloped knotty pine ceiling and nice personal items.  Two windows look out to the lake and onto the hillside.  The large en suite bathroom has a shower stall.

A snazzy new stone shed holds the washer and dryer.  There you'll also find bicycles for you to borrow, a barbecue, a fisherman's sink and a second refrigerator.

View from Master Bedroom

The cottage is on an acre of deep green rolling hillside with miles of stone walls.  Horses live in the pasture down the road.  You can walk along the lake side or fish for trout directly in front of the cottage.

Bogland near the cottage

You can walk from the cottage for five minutes along a path to the Roundstone bog site which is part of the Connemara National Park.  It is flat bog land that stretches for miles - it's famous for rare flora and wildlife.  You can visit the ruins of the Marconi radio site where, in 1907, the first trans-Atlantic radio message was sent from here to North America. And you can visit the site where Alcott and Brown landed after the first trans-Atlantic flight from Newfoundland.

You are close to piers for buying fresh fish and lobsters.  Golfers will be happy to be less than 3 miles (4.5 kilometers) from the Connemara Golf Course in Ballyconneely.  The castle in the photo on the right is on the road to the golf course.  There is a wonderful pre-famine walled garden and a special hidden forest of oak trees - both within 5 to 10 minutes walk of the cottage.

There is no land line telephone at the cottage, but mobile phones work very well.  Ballyconneely village is 2 minutes by car (or a nice gentle walk).  There you'll find a pub, a restaurant, several nice shops, a post office, a wine store.  Ballyconneely hosts the annual Oyster Festival in July and a major horse show, also in July.  Roundstone, a beautiful coastal village with an  impressive art center, is 12 miles/19 kilometers.  The bustling village of Clifden is 3 miles/5 kilometers from the cottage.  Shannon Airport is 100 miles/165 kilometers.
