This fine mansion was built in 1560 for the first Baronet Cotter.  It was extended and improved by his descendants several times over the next 300 years and, more recently, by the present owner who renovated and refurbished the house to give it much style and grace without sacrificing the original design.

It's a large, gracious home set on 10 acres of beautifully maintained grounds that look toward the Blackwater River and the Galtee Mountains.  We always pause a bit to enjoy the view before we go inside.

One enters into a large entrance hall that has floors of Portland stone.

This hall leads directly into a warm, inviting, casual sitting room.  The hub of the house, it has a large marble fireplace, cozy furniture, a television and DVD player and many very nice personal mementos.  Red wainscoting and rich wallpaper make this an inviting and comfortable gathering area.

To the right of the entry hall is the very large, very elegant French-inspired drawing.  It has soft-yellow walls above wallpaper wainscotingThere are ornate moldings and curved walls.  Tall windows offer breathtaking views and let in the afternoon sunshine.  The fine formal furniture and appointments, the grand piano and the marble fireplace make this a charming room in which to entertain a large number of people.

The very large dining room seats 14 easily at a long antique table.  There is a feather patterned wallpaper above white wood wainscoting, a decorative fireplace of caen stone and many personal touches.  French doors open to the lawn and manicured gardens.

The kitchen is homey, well equipped and efficient.  One wall is the original stone and the other walls are cupboards and work spaces.  The breakfast table seats 8 for breakfast or a snack.  An adjacent utility room provides excellent storage and houses the washer and dryer.

There is a guest powder room on this level.  It is orange and completely charming.

The bedrooms are reached via a wide, graceful, open curved staircase.

The enormous master bedroom is the only bedroom on the second floor, which is the middle level of the house.  It is located above the drawing room and so it has the same curved walls as the drawing room.  There is a queen bed, lots of storage, a large dressing table.  A small sitting area in front of windows is the perfect spot for enjoying those amazing views.  Orange is used here to good effect.  The large en suite bathroom has a tub and a shower stall and a dressing area.

There are four additional bedrooms located on the third floor.

One bedroom has a queen bed, excellent storage, a rocking chair and an antique painted chest.  A writing desk can be used as dressing table - it is placed in front of a window so that you can enjoy the marvelous views.  The walls and carpet are a warm beige.  There is a dressing room and en suite red and white bathroom that has a shower.

One bedroom has two beds, a queen bed and a standard double bed.  There is a dressing table and excellent storage. Walls are beige over crisp white-painted woodwork.  The en suite bathroom has a tub with a shower-over-tub.

One bedroom has a queen brass bed, salmon walls and a little settee and a fireplace.  The en suite bathroom has a tub in the middle of the room and a shower cubicle.
There is a little room, called Nellie’s Room, that is sort of a play room.  There is a table and chairs, toys and games and some books.  There is also a single bed there.  It's a haven for a child - even if her name isn't Nellie.

The park like grounds are gorgeous.  There is a hard tennis court at the back of the property.

Mallow is a very nice village, not a notably beautiful place, but there are many good shops (lots of shoe stores, curiously) and some very good restaurants.  People there seem particularly friendly.  Cork, a beautiful city, a real city, with many amenities, is 20 miles from Mallow.  Cork City has many interesting attractions and some excellent book stores.

Salmon and trout fishing can be enjoyed on the Blackwater. Several golf courses, including Mallow (one mile away), are nearby. The Old Head Kinsale golf course is one hour's drive.  Horse riding is very near.  Killarney, Cahir and the Rock of Cashel are among the very interesting places to visit.  This is an area of antiquities and beauty.  A train leaves every hour for a 2 hour journey to Dublin.

Cork City is 20 miles.  Shannon Airport is 60 miles.  Mallow Village is 3 miles.
