TORQUAY
LUXURY SEASIDE MANOR HOUSE
 Devon, England
Accommodates 10
5 bedrooms
3 bathrooms, 1 guest powder room

This elegant property is quite unusual.  It is a Regency era, Mediterranean-style villa in Torquay's famous Georgian Hesketh Crescent.  It is actually attached to a fine hotel, but the hotel was once one of Torquay’s cliff-side mansions and this house is part of that.  The building was built by the Harvey brothers, who built many of the fine buildings in London's Holland Park and Notting Hill.
Large luxury house on Dorset Coast in South of England

Drive through the hotel’s large iron gates and past the crescent-shaped hotel.  Facing the sea is the attached private house and 2/3 acre of lawns, terraces and gardens overlooking Meadfoot Beach toward Berry Head and Thatcher Rock.  What a surprise.

Cross the stone terrace and enter the house via a fine Victorian conservatory that has stone floors, wicker and rattan furniture and a large mirror that reflects the garden into the house. Beautiful leaded glass windows line the wall between the house and the conservatory.  This is the perfect place for drinks before dinner or rainy-day reading.

The conservatory leads to the house’s entry hall, a smallish square room with a beautiful old Oriental rug and a tall mirror-fronted antique armoire.  A marble guest powder room is off this hall.

The spacious cream and beige drawing room is romantic and serene.  It has comfortable, traditional sofas with plump pillows and a fringe along the bottom.  There’s a grand piano, lavish draperies, deep ornate cornices, painted portraits of “borrowed” ancestors.  There’s a gas fireplace, lots of art, TV and a video player.  The wall of windows look onto spectacular coast views. French doors open to the sea-facing terrace with garden furniture.  You can enjoy scent of the old English roses while you dine al fresco.

The dining room has rich green walls, white moldings, a gas fireplace with a marble surround, a crystal chandelier, an antique mahogany table to seat 10.   An antique chaise lounge and other carefully-chosen possessions create a rich atmosphere.

The kitchen/breakfast room has black and white marble tile floors, black granite counter tops, custom-made cupboards.  Light pouring in through a large skylight (and the window above the sink) make this a bright and cheerful room.  There is an electric oven and a gas hob, a microwave, refrigerator, freezer and dishwasher. The table can seat 4 for casual dining.  The washer and dryer are in an adjacent utility room.

There are two bedrooms upstairs.  Both have uninterrupted views across the bay.

The master bedroom has a queen bed, cream walls, serious blue-grey silk drapes, fine period furniture including a French Empire armoire, mahogany Louis XVI bedside tables, a patterned sofa, two Louis XVI easy chairs, original water colors by local artists and a nifty black and gilt bronze Empire chandelier.  There is a TV and video player.  The en suite marble bathroom has a large shower stall, double sinks, a dressing room and a closet.

The second bedroom also has a queen bed, antique brass.  It is painted cream and has silk curtains and Austrian silk window blinds.  There is a Georgian mahogany armoire and a mirror fronted armoire, a large French tapestry, an upholstered Louis XVI-style bench on which to sit gazing at the gorgeous views of the sea and the gardens.  There is a TV and a video player in this room too.

The hallway bathroom has a jacuzzi tub and a large shower cubicle.

The other three bedrooms are on the raised ground floor level, once the servants’ quarters.  Each of these bedrooms has a king bed that can be converted to twin beds.

One bedroom, painted sunny yellow, has a pine chest of drawers, a mahogany armoire, flowered bed covers and curtains, a large colorful rug over pine floors, bird prints.  Wall-to-wall shelves have many books for you to read, if you like  - or you can purchase any for a nominal amount, proceeds of which will go to an organization that helps animals in distress.  This is a very cheerful rooms that has a large, tall window.

The second bedroom, painted light blue, has a rose-colored Oriental rug over wood floors, an Empire mahogany mirror, a Georgian bow-fronted chest of drawers, a large table, useful for puzzles, games  or luggage.  Thetall window lets in bright light.

The third bedroom has soft green walls, green silk curtains, white bed covers and curtains, a Louis XV- style sofa with antique tapestry cushions, a large antique English mahogany armoire and a large window that admits lots of light.  This is a rather plain room, but it’s very nice.

These three bedrooms share a large hallway bathroom that has a shower and marble walls and floor.

The grounds are beautiful. No traffic passes the house, no sound is heard. Roses and other plants bloom in profusion.  Pathways lead to outdoor "rooms" along the hillside.

The property’s woodland path meanders down to the sea road and the beach.  The beach is quiet - there are no shops except a little beach café.  You can walk to the cliffs and do a 45-minute circular rock walk along the coastline or the 1-hour long Bishops Walk.  These are very quiet paths, not crowded with other people, a well-kept secret.

Although the house is in a quiet little area, the village of Torquay is a bustling town, a small city, really, that has been very popular with British and overseas travelers for many decades. There is much to do and see here,  restaurants, bistros, pubs, shops, a casino - all walking distance from the house (over a hill).  The house is a 15-minute walk from the town center and the busy harbour area. There are many parks, fine houses, a sense the history of this resort town.

You are welcome to use the hotel’s amenities, pool, tennis, lounge, restaurant.  The beach is a 1-minute walk.  The nearest shop is ½ mile. The nearest pub is right down the road.   The pretty village of Wellswood is a 15-minute walk.  There are other nearby picturesque villages (including Cockington and Coffinswell - noted for their thatched cottages).  Three miles inland is deep countryside.  You can explore Dartmoor National Park (½ hour drive). Plymouth is 45 minutes by car.  The Eden Project and the Lost Gardens of Heligan are 1.5 hours away and are not to be missed. London is 200 miles (a bit under 3 hours by train).

Heating and electricity are included. The telephone acceptss incoming calls only, but you can purchase a card for multiples of £5.  Mobile phones work better in the conservatory or garden. The owner will proved a baby's cot and a high chair. Pets are not accepted. This is a strict non-smoking house.

ACCESSIBILITY NOTICE:

This house is accessible to anyone who can manage stairs.  There is a guest powder room on the main floor. Outdoors, the two terraces have three steps down from the house.  There are two further steps from the terrace to the second “secret terrace”.  There are then 30 steps up to higher terraces and it’s rather steep.  Some of the pathways are gravelled.
