Devon waterfront cottage holiday let in Dittisham near Dartmouth, Devon England

This is a 200 year old 3-storey cottage that’s located right on the Dittisham waterfront. In high tide, the water comes nearly to the cottage’s front door.

Enter into the charming parlor. It has a comfortable sofa and two easy chairs, a TV, video, CD player, books, etchings hanging on the walls, wood floors, the original fireplace with a wood stove insert, windows looking out to the sea.

The dining alcove has a table that seats 4-6. The very nice, small kitchen has an electric hob and oven, refrigerator-freezer, dishwasher, microwave, turquoise cupboards, a tiled back splash, English china, a window looking out to the garden. A shed adjacent to the kitchen houses the washer and dryer.

The terraced gardens are beautiful. On two levels, there are a few steep stairs (without any railing) that meander up through the two cottage-style garden areas. At the top, there is a private sitting area that has perfect water views. There’s a barbecue and a small summer house up here.

Up one level, the front bedroom has an iron and brass standard double bed, a pine dressing table, paintings of boats and seascapes, fabulous views of the water and boats. The en suite bathroom has a deep tub with hand-held shower.

The second bedroom faces the back gardens. It has twin iron and brass beds an antique pine wardrobe and sea-oriented art. It’s a small room, but it’s very nice and bright. The private bathroom is up another level. It has a deep tub with a hand-held shower, There are views of the garden (and the neighbor’s garden).

All beds have electric blankets. There is a baby’s cot (crib), but it can fit only on the landing. Because of the tides, there is not 24 hour parking outside the cottage, but luggage can be loaded and unloaded just a few yards from the door. Free parking is 300 yards up a rather steep hill. Dogs are not accepted. This is a strict non-smoking property.

Dittisham is one of the prettiest villages in the South Hams area of Devon. It has 2 excellent pubs, a riverside tearoom, a well stocked village store and a boat hire company. One can go 'crabbing' - lines and bait are available at the tearooms. The historic town of Dartmouth is 5 miles away - famous for The Carved Angel, a fine restaurant, and pubs. In summer, a passenger ferry service operates between Dittisham and Dartmouth. Another ferry, summoned by ringing a large brass ship's bell on the sea wall, takes passengers across to Greenway, the former home of Agatha Christie. From Dartmouth, it is possible to take river trips to the picturesque town of Totnes. A steam train carries passengers from Kingswear on the opposite bank of the river, across to Paignton. The nearest sandy beach is 10 miles.

This cottage is not accessible to anyone with even moderate mobility limitations because of the steep walk to the car and the steep walk up the stone steps to the two garden areas.
