THE COUNTRY HOUSE:
Accommodates
9
4 bedrooms (2 queens, 1 standard double, 1 triple)
3 bathrooms, 1 powder room
Gardens, patio, woods
High speed internet
Games room
This
is a fabulous combination of old and new.
The original house was built in 1750 and it retains the elements of
that style. The addition, built in 2009, is very modern.
The blending of each style is brilliant - and very comfortable.
|

|

|
Enter
into the oldest part of the house. The
small entryway has a glass door at the back that opens onto the back
grassy area.
The master bedroom is to the left of
the entry Hall. We've stayed in this room
and it's very terrific. It has a queen bed, night tables, a
French
door that opens to the back grassy area and the woods, a separate
dressing room that has closet space, a comfortable easy chair.
The large, en suite bathroom has a 2-person shower
stall. The room is completely tiled with watery-blue tiles which
are dreamy and beautiful. Our bathroom photos don't quite capture
the color. . .
|

|
|
|

|

|
Leave
the master bedroom, cross the entry hall and walk
along a long hallway that has lovely windows looking out to the front
courtyard. The first room on the left is a family room that has a
chartreuse sofa bed, standard double size, a TV, a DVD player, a
fireplace, games and toys. A large map of the world hangs on the
wall and a colorful rug covers the floor. The back wall is all
glass and includes a glass door that opens onto the back grassy area
and the woods. |

|
Next
along this hallway is a bathroom that is all gray
slate and white walls. Under a large window that faces the woods,
there is a
long, deep tub with a hand-held shower. There are plants in this
room and a sweet Buddha.

|
The
next room, also on the left, is a bedroom that has a low queen bed,
a white shag rug, two chairs, display shelves and a large walk-in
closet. The
bedroom's floor-to-ceiling, wall-to-wall window makes it seem as if you
are
sleeping outside. A door in that window wall opens to the woods.
The en suite bathroom, all gray slate, has a large
shower stall and a long wood ledge along the mirrored wall.
|

|
Now,
at the end of this corridor, you are at the
reception rooms which are in a line one after the other at a right
angle to the hall that you just walked. They comprise the modern
new addition to this historic building.
First, there is the very large and inviting living
room. On the left, a wall of shelves hold many interesting books
for
you to read while you are there. A comfortable leather chair in
front of the bookcase is cozy and convenient for some reading time. |

|

|

|
There
is a big, L-shaped sofa upholstered in dark gray
fabric, easy chairs, a TV and DVD player, two white shag rugs, very
nice art on the walls and objets de arte on tables. Two
easy chairs are in front of the tall
stone fireplace. The
full-wall
windows on both sides of the living room make it difficult to
differentiate
between indoors and out. Even in the cold, dismal weather we've
had when we were there, the room was warm and comfortable. And we
saw several
deer while we were sitting on the sofa!
On the other side of the fireplace wall, a large
utility room has a washer and dryer, a refrigerator-freezer, a
microwave and lots of storage.
Beyond the utility room, the cheerful and spacious
open-plan
kitchen/dining room/sitting room
is perfect. The
kitchen has red cupboards, gray laminate counter
tops, an electric stove top, a wall oven, an island that has a
sink. The
wood dining table seats 12, but 20 can dine here
with other tables added.

|
In
the sitting area by the dining table, an off-white
love seat sits
beneath a large portrait of the family's two daughters. A maroon
lacquer chest and a beautiful modern rosewood glass-fronted cabinet add
to the decor.
The room has three window walls. The back wall
also has a large sliding glass door that opens onto a concrete and wood
sun deck. Nice patio furniture make this a fine place for al
fresco dining. |
Now go back to the front entrance hall in the old part
of the house. The original stairs go up to two bedrooms and a
bathroom. One bedroom has three single beds in a row each with a
different design of bed cover. There is a large armoire and a
working fireplace. |

|

|
 |

|
Across
the hall from the triple bedroom, another bedroom has a
standard double bed and a fireplace. Other furniture and
decoration was added after we visited and took these photos and we'll
have photos of the current look soon.
These two
bedroom share a bathroom with a toilet and sink only, no shower or tub. |

|

|
THE GAMES ROOM:
Across
the graveled drive from the house's sun deck, a
former stable building has
a games/media room with a drop down screen, projection TV, a pool
table, games and high-speed Internet.
|

|
THE STABLE:
Accommodates 8
4 bedrooms
3 bathrooms
There is a cottage in the stable block that is on the
other side of the courtyard across from the modern extension of the
house. This
one-story cottage can be rented for additional
guests of the main house or on its own. When we were last there,
the Stable was a renovation site. Now finished, the owners will
send us some photos this week and we'll put them on the site.
The living room has comfortable furniture, a
fireplace, views of
the courtyard and the woods.
The modern kitchen has all that one could want in a
holiday home.
A
large master bedroom has a queen bed and en suite
bathroom. A twin-bedded room and a bathroom are on one side of
the living area and there are two bedrooms each with a standard double
bed. A shared bathroom is on the other side of the living
room.
The house and stable are on 10 acres of
woodland that is surrounded by the dense woodland in the historic
Newcastle Estate. It is private and silent here. You
can take long walks from the house. Children are warmly welcomed
here. A dog or two might be considered. The owners love to host
weddings and other celebrations.
County Longford is located in the midlands. It
is easily accessible
from Sligo, Galway, and Dublin. Ballymahon, about 1.6 km from the
property, is picturesquely situated on the River Inny. The town
has a fine wide street, pubs, shopping and restaurants. There
many associations with Oliver Goldsmith. This area is said to have
seminal influence on Goldsmith and formed the inspiration for his
future works. Nearby, the town of Longford is on the
south bank of the River Camlin and on the main Dublin-Sligo road.
It is a progressive town and the County Administrative centre. The town
is spaciously laid out with wide streets, pleasant buildings and with
recent signs of impressive urban development. The dome of the
19th century St. Mels Cathedral, a renaissance style building of gray
limestone with lofty tower may be seen from quite a distance outside
the town.
Lough Ree is less than an hour's drive from
the property. It is
one of Ireland's gems. It is a border between Counties Longford
and Westmeath. It's very popular for fishing, boating and
camping. Athlone town, on the harbour, is particularly
nice.
And just south of Athlone on the River Shannon is the historic
monastery at Clonmacnoise.
Edgeworthstown
is a successful
centre located on the N4. The town has a long association with
the celebrated family of Edgeworth, who first settled here in 1583. The
Edgeworth family vault , in which Richard Lovell Edgeworth and his
daughter Maria, the well known poet are interred, is in the churchyard
of Saint John's. Ardagh Heritage Centre is located in an the old
1898 schoolhouse. The story of Ardagh is one of history, literature and
storytelling and the exhibition in the centre draws on the rich fabric
of Ardagh life down through the ages, including its association.
In Kenagh village, the Kenagh Centre interprets an Iron Age bog road
which was built in the year 148 BC across the boglands close to the
River Shannon. The oak road is the largest of its kind to have
been uncovered in Europe and was excavated over the years by Professor
Barry Raft. In Ballinamuck village, the former RIS Barracks has a
lively exhibition giving details of the battle of Ballinamuck and the
events of the year 1798.
The internationally known 18-hole
championship Glasson Golf Course
overlooks stunning Lough Ree. Designed by Ryder Cup Star
Christy OíConnor Juniorr, it's only 15 minutesí drive from the property
in the pretty village of Glasson. The super clean river Inny is
right on the property's doorstep and is a great spot for coarse
fishing. If you'd
like to try it out, the property owner offers package fishing breaks
with accompanying gillie, boat and rods along with picnic
hampers. The Inny Kayaking Club is a local group of paddlers
based in Ballymahon who make use of the 4km stretch of white water
rapids (unique to the midlands) with pour-overs, stoppers, holes and
standing waves on the River Inny. The equestrian centre at
Mosstown Stables, in the nearby village of Keenagh, has state of the
art all-weather facilities and an indoor arena, providing fun classes
for all levels. You can also hire horses during the hunt season.
The Lilliput Adventure Centre (for kids big and small!) is a 20 minute
drive away, on the shore of Lough Ennell. You can hire boats here or
take part in a variety of kids' summer camps and courses such as
Canadian sailing, night hiking, gorge walking, abseiling, pier jumping,
raft building, assault courses or bivouacking. Goodness, be
careful!
Dublin is an easy 1-hour drive which makes
this house very popular with
Dubliners.
ACCESSIBILITY NOTICE:
This is an excellent choice for anyone
with moderate mobility limitations. The house has two bedrooms
and three bathrooms on the main floor. The stable is one level.
