This is an amazing place. The current and former owners have taken a ruin and painstakingly reclaimed it.  The original structure dates from the early 1500's and the castle from the mid-1800's.  This is an authentic castle, turrets and all.  There is nothing phony about it - it's the real thing.

You enter into what seems to be the side of the castle, but it's no less impressive than the other facades.  Pass through magnificent Gothic doors into a large reception room which, in the old days, was where the visiting ladies were helped off with their outer garments and their wigs and make-up received attention before they were announced at the parties.  There is a tall fireplace with an over mantel piece that depicts the Oliver coat of arms.  There is an oak refectory table, a wood floor, a tall, deep bay window with two panels of stained glass.

Ireland Luxury Castle Rental - Library
A doorway to the right of the hall leads to the library.  It is a very large square room with a high ceiling. It's furnished with two long, deep, leather Chesterfield sofas, two leather club chairs. Paneled walls hold tall bookcases that are filled with books.  There is a wood burning fireplace, with an ornate wood over-mantel and a beautiful maroon and green rug over the antique wood floor boards.  Paintings and etchings hang on the walls and tall windows look onto the beautiful lawns.  There is a faintly ecclesiastical feel to the room.

Ireland Luxury Castle Rental - Stair Hall
Another door from the reception room leads to a long hallway called the vaulted passageway.  The first part of the hallway widens to serve as an informal reception room and houses the massive staircase that goes up to the bedrooms, which we'll discuss in a bit.  This wide hall area has a very high ceiling, painted walls above oak wainscoting, a stone fireplace, a heavy round oak table, a beautiful antique map tapestry.   An antique suit of armor leans casually against the stair railing on the landing of the stairs, next to a beautiful stained glass window.

The billiards room is off this main floor hall area, opposite the stairs.  It is a large room painted a beautiful shade green with cream wainscoting.  The large, carved billiards table, in the middle of the room, came from the Irish Army barracks in nearby Fermoy.  There is an ornate wood fireplace, a flat screen TV, a few chairs, nice prints and engravings on the walls.  Tall windows look to the grounds and the hills and mountains beyond.

The center hall narrows past the stairs and passes two guest powder rooms, each with an old fashioned toilet and a tiny sink.  Across from these, a long hall leads to a door that faces the front lawns.

The drawing room is the next room off the center hall.  There is a burgundy leather Chesterfield sofa and two wing chairs and two large, antique, glass-fronted book cupboard holding many interesting volumes.  Ancestors' portraits flank the ornately carved fireplace, paintings on the walls.  Walls are painted rich golden-yellow walls above cream wainscoting and a red and gold rug over the wood floor.  Two tall windows, each draped luxuriantly, overlook the terraced lawns and the hillside and distant mountains.

One wall of the drawing room has large pocket doors that open onto a huge ballroom!  The room is intended for wedding receptions or dancing so it's been left empty except for one ornate gilt side table, a formal settee and a matching chair, a large, deep red draperies and three beautiful gold and red Oriental rugs laid over the wood floor.  A Gothic style fireplace is on one wall.  The owners just added two 4-seat sofas upholstered in pale green and cream and one smaller sofa upholstered in green so that you can enjoy the views.   The morning sun shines through the east- and south-facing windows.

The huge dining room is next door to the ballroom; the doors can be left wide open between these rooms to form one gigantic space.  The dining room, nearly as large as the ballroom, has a long Jacobean oak table that seats 22 comfortably and can seat more.  An antique baby grand piano is in front of the large, deep bay window.  A side table is used as a buffet for breakfast.  Walls are painted what is called "Eating Room Red".  Some parts reveal an early stencil design in some places.  A fire burns in the fireplace that has a large, ornate mantle and an ancestor's portrait hands over the side table.  The morning sun will accompany you at breakfast.

Ireland Luxury Castle Rental - KitchenThe kitchen accessed from the dining room through a secret door that's painted the same as the wall.  It's a companionable kitchen, Irish in feel, not glitzy, but very up-to-the-minute and nice - it's intended to be able to serve large gatherings. There is a 6-burner Rangemaster stove and an traditional electric 6-burner stove with a grill and a double oven.  There is a Belfast sink, a dishwasher, an under-counter refrigerator.  Cupboards are painted gray and counter tops are black granite. The scullery has a large American style refrigerator-freezer, a large sink and an ice maker. The adjacent laundry room has a large washer and dryer and a service sink.

Castle Oliver - Jacuzzi Bedroom
Castle Oliver - Jacuzzi Bedroom En Suite

Castle Oliver has possibly the largest wine cellar in Ireland - it's very impressive.  The plan is for the top floor, not yet part of the rental, to have several more bedrooms, a nursery and a games room.  It's a very exciting project that will add a new dimension of activity to the castle's offering to guests.  We are looking forward to our next visit so we can see how the owners' visions took form.

The grounds are beautiful. Still a work in progress, one can easily see the grand plan and the care that has been taken to make the setting serene and simple.  The castle's terraces are perfect for intimate dining or for a large gathering such as a wedding. The pond, dug by the former owner, adds a further romantic touch.  The gardens, flourishing but rather new, will be even more stunning as they mature. The castle is surrounded by acres of lawns, trees and rolling hills.  Nearby, white Irish cottages nestled into the hills are part of the castle's view.  Beyond that, the Ballyhoura Mountains.
Castle Oliver View

Robert is the butler and he is there 7am - 3pm to help you.  He will serve a cold breakfast from the side table in the dining room or, if you like, he can cook breakfast for you for an added fee.  He will also provide a lovely afternoon tea whenever you are home.

You will have full access to the kitchen where you can cook your own dinner feasts or you can hire a cook who lives in the area and she will make whatever you wish.  Or, of course, you can have a combination: a cook some nights, cooking for yourselves other nights and dining out some nights.  The arrangements can be very flexible.

WEDDINGS:
The castle is perfect for large weddings and other large gatherings.  The baronial dining hall is ideal for a canele-lit dinner for the bridal parety the night before or after the wedding.  Retire to the billiards room or enjoy a night cap in the private library.  We can arrange for additional guests to stay in nearby hotels, B&B's and rental houses.  Please tell us your dreams and we'll help you arrange the perfect wedding.

Castle Oliver Pond - Nick's Folly
Castle Oliver nestles between two unspoilt villages, Ballyorgan and Ardpatrick.  Both villages have authentic pubs that feature Irish music and, once a week, set dancing.  There are cross-road dancing with local musicians, an ancient tradition that continues to thrive in the area.  The Ballyhoura Mountains, seen from the castle, are less than five minutes by care.  There is the largest trail network of its kind in Ireland so you can walk, hike or cycle.    The castle is half-way between Cork City and Limerick City so they are ideal for easy day trips.  Kerry, Clare and Tipperary Counties are also day trips, but a bit further from the property.

Children are warmly welcomed here. The castle is non-smoking; smokers are asked to smoke on the terraces and use the available ash receptacles. We regret that the castle is not suitable for pets.

Shannon Airport is 40 miles (65 km).  Limerick City and Limerick City are each about 25 miles (52 km).  Killarney is 60 miles (95 km).  Galway City is 88 miles (153 km).  Dublin is 145 miles (233 km).
