| Accommodates
10 5 bedrooms 4 bathrooms This
castle, actually a
tower house, was built in 1467 by Sean MacNamara. In 1570, it was
the seat of the warrior MacNamara Clan and remained so until 1659
when
it was confiscated by Cromwell, whose troops occupied the
building. The monarchy was restored in 1670 and the castle was
returned to the
MacNamaras. It was sold to the Scott family in 1800 and a major
restoration was undertaken by them. Lord Dunboyne acquired the
castle in 1855 and he completed the restoration. In the early
20th
century, it was headquarters of General Michael Brennan in the course
of Ireland's fight for freedom. By the 1920's, the castle had
fallen
into neglect. Fortunately, it was purchased by an Irish-American
family in 1966.
They made an extensive and sensitive restoration that returned the
castle to its 15th century glory (with 20th century comforts!).
The
castle is now owned by an Irish development company that maintains
the building with care. Many dignitaries have stayed
here, including Irish presidents, former US President Ronald Reagan
and Premier Charles de Gaulle.

| The main Banquet Hall (originally Lord Dunboyne’s picture gallery) is the venue for the medieval banquets and wedding receptions. The T-shaped hall has a wood beamed ceiling, large banners, wood banquet tables, benches and candle holders. In the centre of the hall there is a stage from where the butler and ladies of the castle, dressed in medieval costume, entertain guests. | ![]() |

The medieval banquets are great fun. You will be greeted by the costumed Earl's Butler and the Ladies of the Castle and proceed into the Dalcassian Hall. Here you savor a goblet of Mead (honey wine) while listening to harp and fiddle music followed by medieval choral singing by the lovely Ladies of the Castle. The Earl's Butler relates the history of the castle and explains the ‘Rules of Chivalry’ and the dire consequences of breaching them. The Earl receives his sword of office and presides over the banquet, a 5-course meal with red and white wine. Many amusing things happen – we won't give you even a hint! It's superb fun - a highlight of a visit to Ireland. |
