Accommodates 8
4 bedrooms 2 bathrooms This fine castle, which dates from the early 11th Centruy, is located on the banks of the Kilcolgan River near the mouth at Galway Bay. Rebuilt in the early 18th Century using many of the original walls, it is now warm, homey and very comfortable - a fine choice for a special holiday. Drive
through the gates and onto
an
impressive avenue that meanders past the stables (and, usually, some
ponies
cavorting on the green). A circular driveway leads you to the
castle
entrance. Through old, tall wood doors, a tiled-floor
hallway
leads to the left and right. To the left, there is a boot room
filled
with country boots, a saddle, various hats for different occasions, a
nifty red hunting outfit, many riding ribbons and antique hunt
prints on the walls.

| Now, let's go back
inside to the center hall. Go up three
carpeted steps into an interior hall with a few more steps up to into a
very nice small sitting room that has a sofa and two easy chairs
all covered in a watery floral print. There is a fireplace with a
surround of maroon tiles and black-painted wood. There is a
pretty little table with a
duckie lamp, magazines, a few books. The walls are
stone. Views are of the river - a door opens from the rooms to
the water's
edge. Next is a second sitting room. It's a bit larger than the first and it feels like a library. It has very nice, old Irish furniture. There is a small writing table, many interesting books, a stone fireplace, a floral rug. The room has many antique swords, muskets, breastplates, military medals and other memorabilia, much of it specifically part of the castle's history. |

| The
drawing room is down three steps
and through a short hall. It is a large room that has lots of
furniture, all comfortable, all traditional in design. There are
two sofas, nine wing
chairs, a baby grand piano, a fireplace, terra cotta walls.
Decorations include ancestors' portraits, large stuffed birds,
antiques. A handsome rug covers the stone floor. Large
windows look out to the water and the grounds. This is a
very peaceful room, perfect for entertaining or for just having
some private time. It's quite a romantic space. |

Adjacent to the drawing room is a TV room that has a leather sofa and two club chairs, a wood stove set in a stone fireplace, many photos of hunts and buildings and lots of old chaps in sports regalia. As with the other memorabilia in the castle, most of this is specific to the castle's history. There is a TV, DVD player, books. | ![]() |

The four bedrooms are up the winding stairway. Two bedrooms are on the second floor. The first bedroom has a standard double bed with a white cotton bed cover, two mirror-fronted corner wardrobes, a lady's slipper chair covered in beige damask, light green walls and crisp white woodwork, gray-green carpeting, antiques and prints. The windows look over the parapet onto the lawns. | ![]() |

Two
more bedrooms are further up the
curved stairway. One has twin beds with white bed covers and
lavender bed skirts, a slipper chair upholstered in peach cotton, two
mirrored corner wardrobes and purple velvet drapes on the windows that
look onto the front lawns and stables. The fourth bedroom has a standard double bed with with white bed covers. This room has the same mirrored corner wardrobes and a lavender upholstered slipper chair. Simple floral curtains cover two windows that look onto the river. The shared bathroom has lavender fixtures including a long, deep tub and shower over tub. This is as large as the second-floor bathroom and virtually the same except for the color choices. |

The sweeping lawn at
the rear of the castle runs down to the bank of the river. The
lawn is a great place for a croquet match or soccer or
other team sports - or for just lying on the grass and watching the
clouds move across the Irish sky. The river is a great place to
see wild fowl,
including the resident swans. |

The owners live in a self-contained wing of the castle. Karen, an Irish-American who inherited the castle from her father, is a keen sportswoman who can organize fox hunting, fishing, game shooting, sailing and golfing. Children are warmly welcomed here - you and the children can ride the ponies - or just admire them. We regret that pets are not allowed because of the ponies. Helocopters can land on the grounds with ease. |

The
castle is one mile from several excellent restaurants and under 1/2
mile to a well-known pub. Day
trips to Connemara, the Aran Islands and the exquisite landscape of the
Burren are ideal if you are interested in nature, archaeology or
geology. Clifden, the jewel of the Connemara, is under an hour
through gorgeous scenery. County Mayo, also incredibly
beautiful, is a bit further on. Galway City, 10 miles from the
castle, is a university town with fine restaurants, theater, galleries
and book stores.
Dublin is 125 miles. Shannon Airport is 46 miles. The nearest village is under 1/2 mile. ACCESSIBILITY NOTICE: The
castle is not wheelchair accessible. The spiral stairway to
the upper floors has a sturdy handrail, but it might be difficult for
people
with more than moderate mobility or vision limitations. |
