Kinsale Luxury Mansion Dining Room Detail

The middle part of the current house dates from 1700.  Two wings were added a bit later.  One early owner, a well-known artist of the time, painted several murals that remain on the house's walls.  The current owners have completely renovated the building borrowing from their time lived in the Far East and Australia.  It’s an eclectic interpretation and that’s part of the charm.

It’s not easy to describe this house.  We could just list the rooms, but, instead, come with us as we wander through the house.  If you become lost, we’ll come back for you.

The house is only one room wide so all public rooms must be reached by going through other rooms.  Upstairs, each wing has a long hallway with windows on one side of the hall and bedrooms on the other side.  There are several stairways going up to various parts of the second level.
Kinsale Mansion Entry Hall Arch

Enter into a welcoming hallway with a stairway up to bedrooms.  The west wing is to the left of the  entrance hall   The first room on the left is a wood-paneled sitting room.  It contains the throne of a former Bishop of Sligo, lithographs of some pages of the Book of Kells, green leather sofas and wing chairs, a fireplace, an ornate chandelier.

Go through this room to the smaller of two dining rooms.  It has two tables, beige suede chairs, stone steps up to the old hay loft.  On our first visit here, the owner cooked breakfast for us and served it here: delicate crepes filled with scrambled eggs and salmon, perfect rolls and muffins, fresh orange juice.  It was one of those breakfasts that one always remembers.

Large Luxury Kinsale, Ireland Rental Dining Rooom

Next to the dining room is a sitting room that we call the “News Room” as it has original old newspapers bound in leather cases.  It has stone walls and floors, a large table, gold suede wing chairs, pews along the wall, a large desk, a plasma TV, ISDN outlet.  It was set up for a meeting the day we took our photos, but it csn be used as a sitting room or a dining room.

Kinsale Large Luxury Rental Japanese Room

From there, stairs go up to the Japanese bedroom, the only bedroom up this particular stairway.  It is a smallish room with a standard double bed that has a distressed wood headboard, a campaign chest, a TV on a chest, small windows looking out over the lawns, a door to a small balcony.  The en suite tiled bathroom has a shower and a Japanese-style tub that is recessed in the floor.

Kinsale Large Luxury Rental Kandy Suite

Back down to the main floor, a long corridor leads to the Indian themed Kandy Suite decorated in green and red.  The king bed, with a leather headboard, can be converted to twin beds.  A single bed against the wall is used as a sofa, but a child would be comfortable sleeping here.  The separate sitting area has two divans, a large coffee table that was once a bed in India, cupboards, a TV, good lighting.  French doors lead to the side of the property.  The en suite bathroom, fully tiled with blue-green mosaic tiles, has a tub, and a shower behind a glass block wall.

Back to the stairs that come up from the “News Room”: there’s a sitting area on a landing that has wood furniture and wood floors - a nice little quiet space.

Turn right into the Chinese bedroom.  It has a queen bed with a rattan headboard, red walls, a single bed that’s used as a sofa (but fine as a bed for a child), a large round table and chairs.  The wood-paneled bathroom has a tub and shower.

Back to the stairs and the landing, a corridor leads to a bedroom with a Thai theme.  The king bed can convert to twin beds (as in these photos).  Its headboard is a tall antique rattan screen.  There is a dressing table that has a subtle stained design on the top, other antiques, wood floors.  The en suite bathroom has a tub and a shower.

Next door, a bedroom with a Balinese theme has a half-tester queen bed with a leather headboard and gauzy fabric, a wood floor, an impressionistic statue of a praying woman.  The wood paneled en suite bathroom has a tub and shower.

Now go back to the front entry way and turn right, into the west wing of the mansion. This is the “party wing”.

The dramatic long reception room has faux leather walls, Chinese red furniture, art, plants, good lighting, windows facing the courtyard and a double-fronted fireplace with a wood stove insert which divides the room into two seating areas.

The kitchen is gorgeous.  Located just off the reception room, it has a big granite and wood island with tall chairs, an Aga stove with a gas 6-burner cook top, a Belfast sink and a small round sink and a karge refrugeratir,  A gigantic dresser holds white china.  A door leads to a butler’s pantry that has a sink and espresso machine, shelves of serving  items, a wine rack and much more.  Adjacent to this kitchen is a small professional kitchen that is used by caterers.

Go back through the reception room into a hallway.  Up some stairs there is a sitting room with leather furniture and a wood stove set into a fireplace that has a red wood mantle set into the stone wall.  Two hallways lead off this room to more bedrooms.

Kinsale Mansion French Bedroom
The French Suite is perfectly charming.  It  consists of  two rooms and a bathroom.  One room has an antique standard double French bed made from mahogany and covered with a soft cream blanket.  There is a wing chair with gray-blue upholstery, a mahogany secretary, prints on the walls.  A deep window looks out to the front lawns.

A gray silk curtain separates this room from the second bedroom in the suite.  It has an antique iron standard double bed, a mirrored armoire  and a TV that can be adjusted to be viewed from either room. The rooms are unified by silver-blue walls and the white-painted floor.

Kinsale Mansion French En Suite Tub
The en suite bathroom has an antique long, deep tub and a separate corner shower stall, a pedestal sink, a big window that over looks the horses in the paddock.  Very dreamy. Kinsale Mansion French En Suite Shower

At the end of a long hall is the Italian bedroom.  It has a graceful black iron standard double bed, a fireplace, chest of drawers.  The separate seating area has two dark green leather easy chairs.  The en suite bathroom has grayish walls, marble floors, a tub and a shower.

Kinsale Luxury Rental Tudor Bedroom

The Tudor room is where we stay, but you are welcome to use it! It has a king bed that could convert to twin beds, an antique leather sofa, a large carved fireplace mantle, great views over the grounds.  The en suite bathroom has a tub and a shower.

The Irish Country bedroom has a standard double bed with the head and foot boards made from antique doors.  There is a sofa, nice storage cupboards, art, a spiral staircase to tiny loft.  A hallway door leads to an internal balcony overlooking the red reception room.  There’s a very nice green bathroom with a deep soaking tub and a separate shower.

The Irish Georgian bedroom is across the hallway.  It is a large room that has a king bed that has a headboard made from an old door and other very attractive furniture.  The en suite bathroom has a tub with shower over tub.

The spacious Australian Room has a king bed that can convert to twin beds.  A single bed can be used as a sofa.  A veranda at the back looks out on the wildflower garden. The en suite bathroom has a deep tub and a separate shower.

The previous owner, the High Commissioner of Gambia, had an Africa Room and so do the present owners.  It has a queen bed, painted floor mats, a sofa, desk and African objets d'arte.  The large en suite bathroom has a bathtub and a separate glass shower.

The  Rhode Island Room honors Kinsale’s sister town in the USA, Newport, Rhode Island.  Decorated in an Irish take on New England style, it has a queen bed, very nice country furniture and light colors.  The en suite bathroom has a tub and shower cubicle.

The Elephant Room has king bed, generous storage space and a sort of Indian ambiance.  It is a light-hearted room, large and bright.  The en suite bathroom has a shower.
New Asian themed bedroom

Go back down to the red reception room and then down a few more stairs to another sitting room that has comfortable wood furniture, a fireplace with wood stove insert, a Buddha statue, other art.

The room next to that is the Pub.  Yes, the pub.  It is strictly for you group's private use, but it's a pub nevertheless.  A large, elegant room done in terra cotta and turquoise, it has a fireplace with a wood stove insert.  There is comfortable leather furniture.  The bar has ten leather bar stools, granite counters, brass fittings.  The wood floor has recessed green lights - hard to explain, but very effective.  There’s a sitting area at both ends of this rectangular room - one of he areas is often used for musicians..

Through the pub is the very large ballroom.   A long table and 50 chairs allow this room to adapt to a bnaquet hall. Colors are rich blue and aqua and soft orange.  There’s a marble fireplace.   The walls have murals painted by an early owner.

The Gardens:

The 700 acres are beautiful.   The gardens, designed along the river that meandersthrough the property, have mature trees and shrubs, some of which are rare specimen plantings.  The owners have added to the wonder: making pathways and sitting areas  and outdoor "rooms".  This is truly a park.  We spend hours here, mostly alone, or so it seems.  It's so large and so well-planned that one might not know if there were other strollers nearby.

There is a helipad, a children’s playground, a croquet lawn, a picnic area, a pond, walking paths, a forest, stables with dressage and a jumping area.  This place is another world.

The Cottages:

There are two other buildings on the property, a little bit from the main house.  These cottages are for additional people who are renting the main house.  They are not rented separately from the main house.   For photos and descriptions of the cottages CLICK HERE.
