These ancient lands and the buildings were part of one Derbyshire's earliest settlements.  The property dates from well before 1200.  In 1259, Sir Richard de Hartle, was issued a Papal Bull by Pope Alexander II allowing him to appoint his own chaplain.  The estate house  became a chapel and was used as a place of worship until 1546.

These historic buildings, surrounding the old cobbled courtyard, have been carefully converted to retain many  original features including massive oak beams; mullion windows, thick stone walls, cubbyholes and flagstone floors.  The owners, antique dealers, have decorated the cottages with fine antiques and fabrics that are perfectly suited to the theme and style of the cottages' history.

These luscious cottages are on 14 acres just outside the village of Alport in the gorgeous Peak District National Park.  The treasures of Haddon Hall and Chatsworth are nearby, as are many wonderful villages and towns, including Bakewell and one of the best towns for antiquing, Ashbourne.  The property's central location is ideal for antique shopping, walking and exploring the wonders of the Peak district.

The property has a leisure facility with an indoor heated swimming pool and changing facilities.  You can book swim time on arrival - a minimum 1 hour of private use per day.  For adults, there is a sauna, a coin-operated 4-person jacuzzi solarium and a mini gym.  All ages acna enjoy the games room that has a coin-operated pool table.

The owner, an international antiques dealer, operates his business from the property.  You are welcome to visit the shop, but you have to reserve a time to do this.
 

COMMON FEATURES OF THE COTTAGES: All of the cottages offer the following: Central heating, a Victorian gas barrel stove, dishwasher, refrigerator/freezer, microwave, CD player, 2 TV’s, video.   Every cottage has its own patio and garden furniture.  A baby’s cot, highchair, bed guard are available by prior arrangement.  There is ample parking and a shared pay phone (outgoing calls only). Dogs are welcome.  There is a 1-acre dog play area.  Please note that dogs must be kept on a lead except in the dog area. There are various services that are offered at an additional fee; among them, daily milk and newspaper delivery, daily maid service, grocery delivery and dinner delivery service.  All of these must be arranged in advance.

HENRY’S HAUNT Accommodates 2 1 bedroom 1 bathroom Named after Henry VIII, who is believed to have stayed at the Estate’s Manor Hall, this is the smallest cottage.  It offers very cosy ground floor open-plan accommodation. The sitting/dining area has south-facing views over the open countryside.  The kitchen area is beautiful and modern.  The bedroom has a marquetry inlaid oak 4-poster double bed.  The spacious en suite bathroom has a shower.

The sitting room has a Victorian gas barrel stove, antiques, comfortable and attractive furniture, windows that look onto beautiful views.  The galley kitchen is a dream.

COKAYNES HAUNT Accommodates 10 5 bedrooms 3 bathrooms Cokaynes and Henry’s Haunt, next door to one another, can be interconnected and rented together to accommodate 10.  The dining facilities can seat up to 14.

This ground floor cottage has its own south-facing terrace with garden furniture and views over the countryside.   The sitting/dining room has an impressive beamed ceiling, traditional, comfortable furniture, antiques and art.  The excellent kitchen is open to the sitting/dining room. There are 2 bedrooms.  One bedroom has a Victorian brass double bed.  The other bedroom has bunk beds. The bathroom has a shower.

Accommodates 4 2 bedrooms 1 bathroom This is a self-contained second-floor apartment that is reached via an exterior stone staircase.  Don't let the word "apartment" deter you: it's beautiful.  It is above the indoor swimming pool (there is excellent sound insulation).

There are two bedrooms.  The master bedroom has antique mahogany furniture including a 4-poster bed.  The other room has twins.  The bathroom has a tub, but no shower.

Hartle is an authentic 13th century building with medieval stonework. The spacious sitting room has stone walls, a Victorian gas barrel stove.  The dining room seats 4 comfortably.  The kitchen is excellent.

Upstairs, there are two bedrooms.  One bedroom has a Victorian brass double bed.  Theother bedroom has twin beds and views over open countryside.  The bathroom has a shower.

The Chapel, dating from 1296, was first used to raise an army to fight in the Crusades.  It then  became a chapel and was used continuously until 1546.  It has magnificent medieval stonework.

The Chapel has a flagstone entrance hall which opens to the large dining hall.  The comfortable sitting room has rich colors and an old world atmosphere.  The excellent  kitchen has a French door opening to the south-facing terracethat has outdoor furniture and stunning views.

Upstairs, there are three bedrooms.  One has an antique oak double4-poster bed.  The en suite bathroom has a tub, but no shower.  One bedroom has a Victorian double brass bed.  One bedroom has twin beds.  The hallway bathroom has a tub.

The sitting room is beautifully furnished with a mix or antiques and traditional pieces.  It steps down to the large farmhouse kitchen that has a large dining area and French doors to the garden and the patio that has garden furniture and a barbecue.

Henry’s Haunt, Cokaynes Haunt, Priesthill, Cokaynes are one-storey cottages.  DeFerrers is 2 levels, but it has a bedroom and bathroom on the ground floor.  The estate’s medieval plan is mostly flat; however, the cobblestone walkways may be a challenge for travelers with limited mobility, vision or balance problems.
