Myres Castle Luxury Serviced Vacation Rental - Auchtermuchty, Scotland

The Earl of Fife originally owned all of the county called Fife, near Edinburgh.  In 1424, the land was acquired by the Duke of Albany; however, in 1425 the estates were forfeited to the crown.  The land was soon divided into the North Quarter, called the Uachdarmuc, and the South Quarter, called the Myres, where this castle was built.
Six families have owned the property since then; among them, members of the famous Bruce family and, in the mid-19th century, the Fairlie family, who held it until 1999.  The current owners have made a complete restoration of the castle which had, over the centuries, fallen into disrepair.  It was a massive project that restored the castle and gardens to a fine estate.  They are delighted for guests to rent the castle on an exclusive use basis.  This is a very lucky thing for you!

Enter into a square, stone-floor entry hall where a grandfather clock ticks ponderously.  There is a variety of interesting antiques and a large, round antique reception table.  It’s a welcoming area that will give you a good idea of what's to come.

The enormous drawing room is to the left.  It's a beautiful room, gracious and richly appointed.  Colors are gold and beige and cream.  There are  large, comfortable sofas flanking the fireplace, wing chairs, a large ottoman-coffee table, an antique French dresser that displays fine heirloom china, a harpsichord, tables with family photos in silver frames, keepsakes and objets d'art.  Ancestors' portraits and landscapes hang on the walls, a beautiful knitted rug lies on wood floors that have a marquetry pattern.  Tall windows look out to the landscape.

The elegant dining room is up some stairs from the entry hall.  The oval mahogany table seats 20 comfortably.  There are sideboards holding fine serving pieces, floor-to-ceiling windows, a decorative fireplace, lamps and a crystal chandelier, painted walls above the original mahogany wainscoting.

The Victorian kitchen is perfect for informal dining or breakfast for up to 8 people. Enjoy a simple supper at the old, much-loved and well-used kitchen table, basking in the warmth of the Aga stove.  It's a comfy wintertime retreat.
The large snooker room is also an art gallery.  A changing display features current Scottish artists, all highly regarded.  The walls are papered with a beautiful brown and black William Morris wallpaper said to have been delivered by the man himself.

Off the Snooker Room, there's a bright and casual sitting room that has a TV, DVD, Nintendo, sofas, and easy chair and a beautiful glass-fronted cupboard that contains books and games.

The Muchty Room is for meetings.  It has a long walnut conference table, 12  chairs upholsered in red, striped wallpaper, and Oriental rug over wood floors.   Projectors and other visual aids can be provided.

The Library is richly appointed with comfortable red sofas and easy chairs, an antique dresser that displays rare china, floor-to-ceiling shelves lined with books, a marble fireplace, a TV and video player, a bar in an alcove, a round table, cream walls above mahogany wainscoting.

The Study has green striped wallpaper, books, a fireplace, wing chairs.  This is a small personal room that's perfect for writing letters or doing some computer work.  There is a phone line, a high speed internet modem and a fax machine.

RICHARD’S ROOM has a king bed that can convert to twin beds. This is an elegant, comfortable and spacious room.  The French mahogany armoire and dressing table were hand-painted in the early 19th century.  The bedspread and curtain fabric are a soft floral pattern, striped wallpaper complements it perfectly.  The large en suite bathroom is nearly as large as the bedroom.  It has has a sense of gentlemanly masculinity with a large, deep claw foot tub with a hand-held shower and a separate large shower with a shower head the size of a dinner plate.

CHARLES’ ROOM is great! It has a king bed that can convert to twin beds.  The walls have a blue and white trompe d'ole "tent" designed by muralist Jonathan Humphries.  There is a "rip" in the "wallpaper" and a tiny, friendly "mouse" peeking in to say hello. Curtains are flowered and furniture is antique and it's all very, very nice.  There are many interesting items in the room - lots to see.  The en suite yellow bathroom has a tub with shower over tub.

CHRISTOPHER’S BEDROOM is on the ground floor, a few steps off a small hallway.  It has a king bed that can convert to twin beds.  Fabric is a light plaid and striped wallpaper has matching colors.  Antique furniture provides excellent storage.  There are many personal touches, lots of Scottish art, antique keys hanging on a hook, old canes and suitcases - all add a playful and imaginative touch.  The dramatic green bathroom has a free-standing tub and a separate large shower.  There is a smashing painting of a woman at the beach - you won't miss it!  The loo is in its own little room.  A small hallway has a door that opens onto an outside courtyard.

THE QUEEN’S BEDROOM, up a stone stairway, is where Mary, Queen of Scots is said to have slept when she visited the castle.  A Spanish chestnut tree, seen from the window, was planted in her honor.  The antique carved mahogany bed has a queen mattress (how appropriate!).  An antique armoire provides excellent storage.  A 19th century quilt hangs on the wall.  The en suite bathroom has a fabulous tub from the old Queen Mary cruise ship.   Its  shower is one of the first of its kind.  The antique loo has a blue and white porcelain bowl and a wood seat, very queenly.

THE TOWER BEDROOM, the largest bedroom in the castle, is up a winding stone stairway, snuggled under the eaves.  It's very romantic.  It has a king bed that can convert to twin beds, an antique armoire, a decorative fireplace, St. Andrew’s tartan fabric.  A long, deep claw foot tub and double sink are right in the bedroom.  The loo is in a private room.  Behind a wee door, there’s your very own stairway to the turret - the perfect place to watch the sunset.

THE SCHOOLROOM is on a landing nestled at the top of the castle.  Many generations of children had their lessons here.  There are many relics from those days, toys and books and the old school bell in the small adjacent sitting room.

The bedroom, up three steps from the the Schoolroom, is beautiful.  It has a romantic
French hand-painted queen-size  mahogany bed.  The armoire, chest of drawers and dressing table are fine antiques.  The window provides magnificent views over the formal gardens.  This is the room for garden lovers.

ANNE’S BEDROOM has a queen bed.  It's a feminine, romantic room done in pink and white toile de jouy pattern.  Although it’s the smallest bedroom in the castle, it’s very charming.  The en suite bathroom has a sunken tub with a shower over tub.
TOM’S BEDROOM has a standard double antique 4-poster bed with tapestry hangings.  This is a masculine room that evokes a sense of history with its substantial furniture and understated decoration.   The en suite bathroom has a shower.

JOANNA’S BEDROOM has a king bed that can convert to twin beds.  It is feminine and charming. Colors are rich coral and cream.  A dressing table is fitted into one of the circular corner alcoves.  Views from this room are of the Rose Walk.  The en suite bathroom has a claw foot tub.

David Fairlie's grandfather was a Private Chamberlain at the Vatican to three Popes - Leo XIII, St.Pius X, and Benedict XV.   The walled garden was created in 1890, based on one of the small gardens within the main Vatican garden.  There is a Rose Walk, a maze an herb garden and a kitchen garden.   There's a tennis court, a volley ball court, badminton, a croquet lawn.  They have four mountain bikes for you to borrow.  And, for the less energetic, there a many beautiful private places on the grounds to sit and be alone for a while.

All bedrooms have a direct-dial phone  and  CD player.  The staff can arrange appointments for massage, hairdressing, barbers, facials, manicures and pedicures, yoga teachers either at the castle or in the community.  Baby sitting can be arranged as well.  There are many forms of entertainment provided by the castle: a ceilidh (tradition music and dancing including a caller), a piper, a disco, fireside ghost stories, whiskey tasting and talk, murder mystery evening, fireworks.

A helipad is on the grounds so that, if you prefer, you can transfer from Glasgow or Edinburgh Airport and have cars or drivers to meet you at the castle.  The staff can arrange fly fishing, clay pigeon shooting, falconry displays, archery, off-road driving, river and loch fishing, driven pheasant shooting.  There is "real tennis" at Falkland Palace, four miles from the castle.  Polo can be arranged in nearby Perth.  Horse riding is nearby and this can be arranged for you.

The castle is within a hour's drive to 100 golf courses; among them, St. Andrews, Ladybank, Gleneagles, Carnoustie and others (prior notice is necessary).  Helicopter transfer can be arranged for most of these courses.

The castle is available for a 2-night minimum stay.

THIS IS NOT A SELF-CATERING PROPERTY. All-inclusive prices include breakfast, informal luncheon, afternoon tea and formal dinner.  The chef and his staff prepare outstanding cuisine that uses local produce and the finest ingredients.  Special dietary needs or preferences are accommodated.  The wine list and selection of spirits is extensive.  The small, discreet staff will do all they can to assure that this is a holiday to remember always.

The castle is available for private gatherings, corporate events and weddings (they host great weddings here and they love doing it).
