Until recently, this extraordinary building was just a ruin.  Meticulously restored, it is now a pristine, luxurious and very comfortable castle retreat.

A fortified tower has been on this site since the 11th century.  There is still a medieval burial site and the remains of one Scotland's earliest Christian chapels.  The Tower's location was originally chosen because it afforded views in every direction, so that one would have early warning of an attack - not an issue now, but it's nice to know you can rely on that!

Patrick Whytelaw, son of Lord Ruthven, constructed the current building around 1550.  In 1587, ownership was forfeited to Sir John Carmichael.  In 1591, King James VI of Scotland, son of Mary Queen of Scots, was surrounded by a rebel army in Fife, north of Edinburgh.  The townspeople helped him escape and James took the ferry across the Firth of Forth and sought refuge at Fenton Tower.  In 1650, Oliver Cromwell invaded Scotland and sacked Fenton Tower.  The Tower ruin passed to Sir John Nisbet in 1663.  In the 1850s, the land and ruins passed to the Simpson family.  In 2000, Ian Simpson and John Macaskill began the Tower's restoration, supervised by Historic Scotland to insure its architectural integrity.   In 2002, the Tower opened as a stateley house.

You drive up a hill on a private avenue and then enter the castle via a small stone entrance hall into the main tower.  To the west of the main tower is a separate entrance where you can store golf clubs and sports equipment, walking boots and outdoor clothing.

The warm pink exterior was created by combining soil and ground sea shells. The fortified walls are up to eight feet thick, with narrow defensive windows on the ground floor.  But the unusually large windows on the upper levels flood the rooms with natural light.

The Great Hall is gorgeous.  It has stone walls and floors, white walls and a high ceiling made of logs cut from trees on the property.  There are two comfortable sofas, easy chairs, an antique oak Dutch armoire, a beautiful rug.  There is a large firplace and large windows with shutters and drapes.  This room is fresh looking, clean and uncluttered, but it has many interesting elements.

Adjacent to the drawing room, there's a library that has  sylish sofa and chairs upholsteredin rich fabrics in warm colors, a wall of custom-made book cases, a writing table,  sky TV, video, DVD.  It's a comfortable, relaxed and beautiful room.

The dining hall is very impressive.  It is a long, narrow room that has a vaulted ceiling and deap window.  The huge oak refrectory table seats 12 on chairs  that are upholstered in various tartans.  An antique Oriental rug covers the stone floor.
Using the finest local produce, the chef will create superb meals based on your requests or the chef's whims, whichever you prefer.  The kitchen is beautiful, modern, efficient and cheery.  It's the chef's territory, but you are invited to partake of the leftovers, make a cup of tea, slice into that delicious cake from the previous evening.

The bedrooms are all upstairs.  They are reached by two spiral staircases.  One goes from the vaulted ground floor to the third floor.  The other goes from the entrance hall up to the garret.  Each bedroom is on its own level along the upward spiral of the staircases.

The Carmichael Bedroom has a queen-size Italian 4-poster bed, an armoire that hides a TV and DVD player, a chest of drawers, a small sofa at the foot of the bed, a fireplace, a fine Dhurrie rug over berber carpeting.  There is a direct dial phone and high-speed internet access.

The large and bright en suite bathroom has an antique French double pedestal sink, a deep claw foot tub for two with a hand-held shower, a decorative fireplace, wood floors.

The Ruthven Bedroom, has a king-size half-tester bed, a large armoire that holds a TV and DVD player, a chest of drawers, a decorative fireplace, a sofa at the foot of the bed, a decoratve fireplace.  There is a direct dial phone and high-speed internet access.

The Seaton Bedroom has a single bed with red bed covers.  It is located above the office.  There is a TV and a DVD, but no telephone or internet connection in this room.  The bright white bathroom en suite has a shower.

The castle's 20 acres of private land includes a secluded loch, a small lake. The property is just 20 miles east of Edinburgh between Gullane and North Berwick with several terrific villages along the coast line.  North Berwick is particularly nice.

There are over 100 golf courses within 30 miles of the property (15 within 10 miles).  These include Gullane, North Berwick, Luffness and Muirfield.  St Andrews is only 22 miles as the crow flies.  There is a helicopter landing pad, so you can fly as the crow nearly anywhere you like.

There are many great historical places of interest; among them, Tantallon Castle and Hailes Castle.  The area is excellent for cyclists (cycles can be hired locally).  The Museum of Flight at East Fortune, home to Concorde and the Myreton Motor Museum, holds an annual Festival of Flight. The annual Edinburgh International Art Festival and Edinburgh Fringe Festival are the world's largest gathering of the theatre world.
